Worship
Worship is an opportunity for the people of God, the Church, to meet with their God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in a service of covenant renewal. In the covenant God makes with us, he promises to be our God ("I will be your God") and summons us to be his people ("You will be my people").
Worship is structured by this covenant relationship: God speaks to us in his Word (in a greeting, call to worship, Scripture readings, the sermon, the Lord's Supper, the benediction, etc.); we respond with hymns of praise, prayer, offerings, and partaking of the Supper.
Worship is to be done in the power of the Spirit and in the Truth that has come in Jesus Christ (Jn. 4:24). It is to be done only as God has authorized in his Word, which is why our churches often speak of the "regulative" principle of worship, i.e., worship is regulated by the Word of God, the Scriptures.
